Families and friends of the missionaries in the Sendai area have been anxiously awaiting news of their loved ones are safe. The Church issued a statement yesterday saying: "Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Japan after the recent devastating tsunami and earthquake."
The Church is assessing the needs of its members and others in the communities impacted by the earthquake. It has confirmed the deaths of hundreds of individuals and tens of thousands have been evacuated. Hundreds of homes and buildings have been destroyed and strong aftershocks still rocking the area. The quake of 8.9 magnitude tremor was the strongest on record in Japan.
